It is about 800 miles from Yellowstone to Yosemite, so we decided to split the trip in two days. We booked our stopover at a hotel in Battle Mountain, and had our diner at Mama's pizza.
At the end off our two day trip over the western high plato, we arrived relatively early at our motel in Lee Vining. After coffee, served by our German hostess who has been in this small village at the foot off the Sierra Nevada, we left for Mono lake. This is a lake with a story. Water only flows into the lake and it doesn't flow out. So over the millennia, Mono lake accumulated minerals and salts, as some four rivers transported them from the Rocky Mountains (called Sierra Nevada in California)
Mineral and salt concentrations started seriously building up after the rivers were diverted to Las Vegas for drinking water. Due to actions of the Mono lake committee, Las Vegas was forced to let the water flow to the lake once more.
Two of our 'group' are adventures and were prepared for a dip in the lake. The water being high concentrated with salts should provide a strong surface tension for autonomous body floating. The water was cold, but they were brave and floated in the midst of the tufas growing in the lake. Afterwards we planned to drive up the youngest volcano of the USA (650 year) for a scenic sunset view. We turned it into a three mile hike along the crater rim. Jeroen on bare feet of course, but this time Karin was on slippers, and that is close to walking on bare foot. She kept up with us for the three miles anyway.
We had a nice diner in Lee Vining, served by a funny waitress, and we finished our diner just in time to get kicked out at closing time.
